Chesterfield line up above on a bitterly cold February day in Birmingham. The fixed grins are most likely frozen on; a story told by players some years later recounts that Sid Ottewell was in the referee's ear all the game, trying to get him to call the match off.

Action from the September 1946 reserve match at the Baseball Ground. Since it has come from a Derby paper it shows them scoring their ownly goal in Chesterfield's 3-1 win: the goalkeeper, who they say is Bill Drury, but minute books indicate was a player named Bennett, fumbles the ball into the net as George Milburn and Dick Cushlow (right) look on.
